SCHELL solutions prove their worth in sports venues
7-minute read
The fit-out of sanitary facilities in sports venues, such as swimming baths, arenas and stadiums, comes with many requirements and is especially challenging. Usage levels fluctuate in day-to-day use, with long interruptions to use also being possible, depending on the type of venue. Fittings that are used by an ever-changing set of patrons also need to meet particular requirements for their design: Exceptional robustness and resistance to vandalism are needed, plus user hygiene and support for maintaining drinking water quality, as well as properties ensuring the economical operation of the venue. We take a look at four properties to show you how these demands can be met perfectly with solutions from SCHELL.
Sports baths, Dieburg
The construction of the new sports baths in Dieburg was organised entirely by WSV Dieburg itself. The club’s new sports baths features a sports pool and multi-use pool as well as a seminar room and kitchenette. The venue is used by 23 schools and more than 20 other clubs.
Challenge:
As the sports baths are visited by many groups of people at varying times of the day, solutions needed to be found for the sanitary facilities that would offer optimum support for maintaining drinking water quality as well as user hygiene – without extra personnel or staff costs. The products also needed to feature robustness, energy efficiency and user comfort while being water- and energy-saving, so as to improve the cost-effectiveness of building operations. Lastly, the sports baths operators were looking to ensure that they could fulfil their legal duty of care regarding the maintenance of drinking water hygiene.
Solution:
With the help of stagnation flushes individually programmed and automatically executed with the help of SWS, the operators of the sports baths can ensure that a complete exchange of water in the piping occurs at all times. These stagnation flushes occur at all tapping points within the building. This avoids the spread of harmful bacteria such as Legionella while offering optimum support for maintaining drinking water quality. Thanks to the end-to-end digital documentation of all relevant data, the operators are also provided with a full record of their compliance with German drinking water legislation. The robust and contactless XERIS E-T wash basin taps plus low-contact LINUS D-C-T showers with COMFORT Flex shower heads ensure a high level of user comfort. A high level of usability is also offered by the GRANDIS E electronic kitchen tap that was installed in the sports baths kitchenette. The tap’s infrared sensor means that water only flows when it is actually required: this is an effective approach to cutting water consumption each time the tap is used. This reduction in water use – and hot water use in particular – means the sports baths owners can cut their long-term energy costs. At the same time, the taps also improve user hygiene, since the tap surfaces do not need to be touched to switch them off, which minimises the risk of contact infections. Nine MONTUS Flow WC modules were installed and also networked with the SWS server, so as to ensure that regular stagnation flushes could also be run here to maintain drinking water quality.

MVM Dome Budapest
The imposing MVM Dome Budapest most recently played host to the European Men’s Handball Championship. Thanks to its advanced systems, the stadium can host almost any type of event, from handball and tennis to figure skating and ice hockey, and even motorsports and competitive swimming.
Challenge:
For a sports venue of this size, the high level of usage experienced by sanitary facilities during an event poses a particular challenge. Product qualities such as resistance to vandalism and robust construction are therefore very important. Compliance with demanding hygienic standards is also required and, last but not least, criteria like energy efficiency and sustainability also need to be met.
Solution:
A total of 214 of SCHELL’s XERIS SC self-closing wash basin taps were installed in the visitor WCs at MVM Dome. These fittings offer manual operation but close automatically after a configurable flow time of 2 to 15 seconds. The water flow volume does not exceed 5 l per minute, making these taps especially economical. The self-closing technology also offers significant advantages for sanitary facilities with high footfall like those in the MVM Dome. On the one hand, this automatic closing system considerably reduces water consumption. On the other, these chromed brass fittings also improve user hygiene in the washrooms because, once hands are clean, the flow of water does not need to be shut off again manually after handwashing by washroom patrons. The minimalist product design also makes the taps especially vandal-resistant, since there are no obvious ‘targets’ such as protruding handles. With these well thought-out product features and a highly functional design, the XERIS SC self-closing wash basin taps from SCHELL integrate seamlessly with the modern, high-quality design approach taken by the multipurpose stadium.

Sportpark Süd des FV Brühl e.V.
Located near to the football stadium, the new club building for FV Brühl e.V. is the centrepiece of Brühl’s Sportpark Süd,offering sports and gymnastics facilities, changing and training rooms, a technical centre and a restaurant.
Challenge:
The new club building with hospitality services aimed to provide FV Brühl e.V. with a modern location for all of its club activities. Featuring the very latest in building services, the venue was also targeting energy-efficient and economical operations. Robust sanitary systems with flexible expansion options were planned, to support high levels of usage by a heterogeneous mix of patrons while maintaining drinking water and user hygiene.
Solution:
Impressed by our ‘Made in Germany’ quality and expert advice, the building owners decided to install sanitary equipment from SCHELL. Networked together with LINUS Inox DP-C-T shower panels and PURIS E HD-M electronic wash basin taps, the SCHELL SWS Water Management System offers optimum support for maintaining drinking water hygiene. Automatic stagnation flushes with a range of programming options reliably prevent the excessive growth of bacteria that are harmful to health.
In addition, water-saving self-closing PURIS SC HD-M wash basin taps and exposed VITUS wash basin taps with manual open/close actuation were also installed.
Under the wash basins, the venue owners again placed their trust in SCHELL as the global leader for angle valves, fitting out the sanitary facilities in their new clubhouse with COMFORT angle valves. A total of 8 sampling angle valves and 2 PROBFIX sampling valves from SCHELL were also installed. These valves meet all of the requirements for systematic testing within sanitary facilities.
Thanks to their intelligent functionality, the SCHELL products installed also help to minimise the consumption of water and energy, thereby helping to contribute to the energy-efficient and economical operation of the new club building.
Despite the high levels of usage expected, the club patrons and owners will enjoy using these fittings for a long time, thanks to the high quality materials used in their construction.

Clubhouse, Eulenbuche (Drolshagen-Hützemert)
This was one of the first clubhouses in the Olpe district: after 50 years in service, the building was due for comprehensive renovations to make it fit for the future. The clubhouse refurbishment was financed by the state sports association. Many SCHELL products are now used in the sanitary facilities to support cost-effective operations, user hygiene and drinking water quality in accordance with VDI 6023.
Challenge:
Sports facilities like the clubhouse in Hützemert often experience long periods of downtime. The risk of unsafe levels of Legionella in the drinking water system is very high during these periods, because the water has plenty of time to stagnate in the piping. The building operators were therefore looking for an innovative and cost-effective overall solution that offered support for maintaining drinking water hygiene.
Solution:
To ensure that the requirements for cost-effectiveness and hygiene could be met over the long term, project developers decided to equip the clubhouse with modern product and system solutions from SCHELL. A total of 12 water-saving exposed LINUS DP-C-T shower panels were installed in the showers, while contactless XERIS E electronic taps were chosen for the washrooms. This cost-effective and hygienic approach has also been applied to the WC facilities, where MONTUS COMPACT II urinal modules are combined with contactless EDITION E urinal controls. A GRANDIS E kitchen tap was fitted in the club kitchen.
All of the taps, fittings and urinal modules are networked with the central SCHELL SWS Water Management System, which uses regular automated stagnation flushes to simulate specified normal operation. SWS can be used for the centralised setup, automatic triggering and end-to-end logging of stagnation flushes. Especially practical: SCHELL’s cloud-based SMART.SWS service, which lets clubhouse management check current installation data from any internet-capable device and make adjustments as necessary. This gives managers an up-to-date picture of the networked drinking water installation, right down to individual fittings.
