Municipal sports centre for Schulzentrum Nord, Wesel, Germany

SCHELL sanitary equipment supports drinking water quality and user hygiene at school sports centre

For renovations to Schulzentrum Nord’s municipal sports centre in Wesel, the operators picked innovative sanitary equipment from SCHELL. The SWS Water Management System helps building operators maintain drinking water quality, while electronic fittings on the wash basins and in the showers provide school classes and sports clubs alike with user-friendly, hygienic operation.

Challenge

Renovations to the drinking water system and sanitary facilities at the Schulzentrum Nord municipal sports centre in Wesel, Germany, had two key aims. First of all, an intelligent solution needed to be found that would offer optimal support for maintaining water quality. The aim here was to effectively minimise the risk of bacteria propagating to critical levels as a result of stagnating water. In addition, action also needed to be taken to ensure the quick and easy sampling of drinking water. User hygiene was another point of focus for the building operators: as the sports centre is regularly used by a large number of user groups, steps needed to be taken to reduce the risk of disease transmission from contact infection. Last but not least, safeguarding user health was another decisive criterion when choosing the new sanitary equipment: reliable anti-scalding protection in the renovated shower cubicles was therefore essential.

Solution

Due to their positive experience with SCHELL products in other construction projects, the operators of the sports centre at Schulzentrum Nord once again picked products from the Olpe-based company. The SWS Water Management System helps to maintain drinking water quality in the sports centre with the help of centrally programmed, automated stagnation flushes from all networked PURIS E HD-M fittings. These flushes ensure a regular exchange of water in the installation piping and so prevent the unchecked growth of harmful bacteria such as Legionella. The PURIS E HD-M and MODUS E HD-K electronic wash basin taps also enable contactless operation. This minimises the risk of disease transmission from contact infection. Operations are also very economical in terms of water usage: the flow of water only starts when hands move into the sensor’s detection range and stops automatically once hands leave the detection field of the infrared sensor. One positive side effect for the building operators is that water only flows when it is truly needed – this allows electronic wash basin taps to achieve savings of up to 70% in comparison with single-lever mixers. The preferred water temperature can be adjusted easily on both models using the temperature control on the side. The LINUS DP-C-T shower panels are equipped with a user-accessible temperature lock set at 38 °C. The integrated ThermoProtect thermostats also provide reliable anti-scalding protection, even if the cold-water line fails or pressure fluctuations occur in the system. A sampling valve for shower heads enables the quick and easy sampling of drinking water in line with DIN ISO 19458.

Efficient resource management with SWS

Alongside maintaining drinking water quality, SWS also offers enormous time savings compared with carrying out flushes manually. Automated stagnation flushes also work to conserve resources. The SWS server is the central ‘control room’ for the SWS Water Management System: the SWS software is used for the flexible control of fittings parameters, such as flush intervals, follow up times and other settings. Data relating to stagnation flushes, calculated water consumption, etc. is logged continuously in a digital format within SWS, providing building operators with access to full records of their compliance with the German Drinking Water Regulation.

Showering in comfort with LINUS DP-C-T shower panels

In the shower cubicles at the sports centre, 32 LINUS DP-C-T shower panels were installed and also networked with SWS. Made from robust extruded aluminium profile with a high-quality, anodised finish, these panels can easily handle daily use by the various sports classes and clubs well into the future. The flow of water is triggered conveniently by CVD touch electronics and stops automatically after an individually configurable period of time – another feature that significantly reduces water consumption. The COMFORT Flex Shower head integrated into the shower panel features a vandal-resistant design while its soft stream ensures a pleasant showering experience. The matching soap trays for the LINUS shower panel also offer a practical storage option for shower utensils.

About Schulzentrum Nord

Based in Wesel, the Schulzentrum Nord campus is shared by the Konrad-Duden grammar school and Konrad-Duden secondary school. The school complex also features two municipal sports centres and sports fields, which clubs can also use for their training and competitions. Both sports centres offer a space of 27 x 45 m, with over 500 people finding seating on the bleachers. The school grounds are also home to an indoor ice rink that is open to the public.
